In the synagogues, the whole Torah (the five Books of Moses) is read through once a year, with several chapters being read each week. This liturgical reading is called Parasha. To complete and deepen the reading, a passage from the Prophetic Writings (or from the historical books of the Bible) is added, the so-called Haftarah (meaning something like conclusion”). The selection may be a little surprising for us. According to our Christian understanding we might have chosen other passages in some cases. But this is exactly what makes it challenging.
The following interpretations shall give some answers to three questions: What does the text say to the Jews, what does it say to Christians, and what does it say about the connections between Jewish and Christian belief?
